WHAT IS FEAR OF SUCCESS ?
IF THE TEAM ARE ALTERNATING BETWEEN WINNING + LOSING, INCONSISTENT, DISJOINTED, APPEAR CONFUSED, ERRATIC, IMPULSIVE, POOR DECISION MAKING, AND WHEN ASKED THEY CAN'T STATE WHY... THIS USUALLY INDICATES A MINDSET ISSUE AROUND 'FEAR OF SUCCESS'.
FEAR OF SUCCESS IS VERY COMMON IN INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE CONSTANTLY COMPETING FOR A 'ROLE' or 'SPOT' IN A TEAM OR GROUP, WHICH REQUIRES CONSISTENCY IN PERFORMANCE IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN THEIR POSITION. SUSTAINABLE SUCCESS IN A RESULTS DRIVEN INDUSTRY HAS NO BLUE PRINT FORMULA. LOOK AT THE RESEARCH INTO MELBOURNE STORM OR THE ALL BLACKS...
FEAR OF SUCCESS IS ABOUT THE UNCONSCIOUS MIND INTERPRETING "ACHIEVEMENT" AS THE END + FEAR OF WHAT'S BEYOND THAT. MANY ATHLETES AND HIGH ACHIEVERS WILL SUFFER WITHOUT KNOWING, AND LOOKS LIKE SABOTAGE OR PROLONGED INJURY RECOVERY OR UNEXPLAINED / UNFORCED ERRORS IN PERFORMANCE THAT KEEP THE DREAM ALIVE. THE FEAR IS, ACHIEVING SUCCESS WILL END THE DREAM AND WHEN THE DREAM HAS BEEN A LONG TERM GOAL, MANY FEAR A LIFE WITHOUT THE DREAM. PARTICULARLY IF THE DREAM WAS THE CORE CONNECTION + SIGNIFICANCE FOR THE TEAM OR GROUP.
"When you understand your brain has 2 primary functions that override every other function, then you will be able to harness your fear and prevent your mind from hijacking your performance."

CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECT...
"LEADERSHIP, LOSING + LEARNING"
Since my brain injury recovery, I have been relentlessly focused on researching neurodiversity, neuroscience and behaviour psychology of teams when navigating 'failure' and 'adversity' in the area of sport, particularly National Rugby League, Rugby Union and AFL. I came across Daryl Gibson in a colleague James Barkell's podcast 'The Coach Doctor', and was fascinated with the dissertation Daryl had written around 'Leading whilst Losing'. This initiated my pursuit of researching studies, papers, books, podcasts and more... around mindset, adversity and the relationship with failure. My curiosity into how people have navigated ongoing 'turmoil' and 'change', has driven this project, with the desire to know more about how individuals process the experience of ongoing failure and if they uncover internal insights along the journey. I wanted to know if there are similar correlations to my own journey with neuroscience and neurodiversity, and if they were able to turn the results around. The data, research and reading has been extraordinary, with incredible information that reveals the significant role that neurodiversity plays in a results based industry like sport and how untapped this resource is due to lack of funding. The quality conversations with phenomenal coaches, players and organisational members have far exceeded any expectation. My respect for these individuals has multiplied 10x as with my gratitude for their time and passion for their sport and the players the coach. I am excited to publish the findings and insights around neurological strategies and building high performance teams. The findings are really insightful and I will be going into detail around implementing neural strategies that coaches and leaders can use to transform their teams during adversity. When we have a deeper understanding of our own capabilities, we are able to unlock our true potential, which excites me!
